Sports at BHS

Our Mission for BHS Sports is to be a place where all youth and high school students have a positive, character-building experience that results in ‘Better Athletes Better People’. Our vision stretches far beyond winning a specific game, and focuses on making a lasting impact in the lives of our students.

BHS aspires to be an outstanding educational-athletic organisation that provides a high-quality experience to every student. A high-quality experience is one in which every student:

- Is taught and coached using the principles of Positive Coaching i.e. the Mastery of ELM
- Has fun at practices and games
- Feels like an important part of the team, regardless of the performance and their ability
- Learns “life lessons” that have value beyond the playing field
- Learns the skills, tactics and strategies of the game and improves as a player.

Positive Coaching
We recognise that teachers, coaches and parents are the people who make this all possible. It is our goal to provide every teacher and coach with the tools to succeed as a Positive Coach. We are committed to creating a positive culture, in which coaches, parents and students work together to achieve our Mission.

We encourage students to play a variety of sports and we do not put pressure on them to specialise too early in their career. Students at BHS are at the centre of the Sports Programme. Our coaches and PE teachers encourage the students, and the team as a whole, to focus on their effort and personal improvement, rather than simply on the results of the game. They help students recognise that mistakes are an inevitable and important part of the learning process and that the key to success is being able to rebound from mistakes with renewed determination. This way, students gain a sense of control over their own development and confidence in their ability to succeed in life, as well as in sports.

Primary Sports

The Early Years Programme and Dance develops the fundamentals of coordination, balance and strength through creative movement. This environment is carefully designed to be safe, positive and fun. In the Primary Years, BHS grow these foundations from Year 1-3 and then introduce more games and competitions in Year 4-6.

There are a variety of sports offered as extracurricular opportunities at Primary Level:

Cross-fit, Archery, Swimming, Running club, Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Football, Tag Rugby, Softball.

Secondary Sports

The Secondary Sports programme offers a range of competitive and non-competitive activities:

Sailing, Gig Rowing, Netball, Basketball, Track and Field, Volleyball, Football, Softball, Cricket, Dance, Cross-country, Diving, Golf, Tag Rugby, Yoga, Ultimate Fribee.

The aim of the Secondary sports programme at Year 10 and 11 is to be more student-centered. Therefore, students have an opportunity to choose what activities they would like to develop. We encourage all students to try new activities and develop their love for sports and maintain a healthy active lifestyle and therefore lifelong participation.

At the end of Year 9 students can choose to complete a two year IGCSE in Physical Education which is 50% theory and 50% practical in its assessment. This course is applied to the practical environment and can help develop skills in a range of areas which can lead to careers in Physiology, Psychology, Analysis and work in the Media.

Throughout the Academic Year at school, our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitions including Inter-House competitions and Sports Days. We also enter all our teams into the Inter-School competitions organised by Bermuda School Sport Federation.

BHS is committed to Honoring the Game by becoming Better Athletes and Better People.
