The Bermuda High School for Girls Secondary Department has a mandate to prepare students to meet the needs of 21st century life. We are preparing our students to be productive citizens of Bermuda, and to take their place on the world stage.

The Secondary Department is organised into Middle Years (Years 7 – 9), the I/GCSE Years (Years 10 and 11), and the two year International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme which is co-ed.

The Middle Years

The Middle Years programme at BHS focuses on developing the whole adolescent. Our aim is to help students transition smoothly from Primary to Secondary. It addresses the adolescent’s social, academic, emotional and physical needs and ensures they are met through a wide variety of academic courses and extensive sporting and extra curricular activities.

Students at the Middle Years’ level take twelve different subjects. The curriculum covers core subjects: Mathematics, English, Science and French or Spanish. These are supported by foundation subjects: Geography, History, Art, Music, Drama, Dance, Physical Education and ICT.

Students also are the only ones in Bermuda to have access to Latin in both Years 7 and 8. Students can opt to continue Latin through to GCSE and IB years.  The Year 7 programme is also supported by having students in a 65 minute period with their form teachers to assist them with organisational and emotional challenges in transitioning to Secondary. Additionally, students are taught about their preferred learning styles, study skills, test-taking strategies and life-skills.

The I/GCSE Years

This two year programme focuses on preparing students for the external British I/GCSE exams. Currently, all students take eight or nine subjects; English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, French or Spanish and four or five other subjects. The examination boards vary depending upon the subject: Ed Excel, AQA and Cambridge. As some of the students will venture to North American colleges/universities, students also prepare for the PSAT exams. The SAT exams are written during the IB years. To balance the academics, students have numerous sports and extra curricular activities from which to choose.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Years

The International Baccalaureate at BHS is open to all qualified students in Bermuda both male and female. The IB programme is a rigorous, two year academic course of study in which students are required to study six subjects, each from a different area of the curriculum: English; Foreign Language; Humanities; Experimental Science; Mathematics and the Arts. In addition, there is a course in Theory of Knowledge, an extended essay of 4,000 words and the completion of 150 hours of community service and activities. The students who successfully complete this programme have been recognised by top universities worldwide and are sought after by these institutions.

Pastoral Programme

The Secondary Department has a good pastoral programme. Each year group is allocated to a Head of Year who is responsible for the academic and personal growth of the students in the year level, and he/she directs the three to four form teachers to that end. The system ensures immediate responses to problems encountered by any students in that year group.  Additionally, the School Counselor and Learning Support teachers provide excellent support to the Heads of Year with their expertise in counseling and special learning needs provision.
