Welcome from the Head of School
Welcome to The Bermuda High School website.
I invite you to discover all about The Bermuda High School on our website: our current academic, artistic and athletic programmes, our extra-curricular activities and student life in general. By far, what makes this school exceptional is the people. Whether Trustees, students, staff, parents, alumni or other related parties, each unique individual forms a valuable part of a strong community, of which we are all very proud. We share values which aim to educate our young people to the highest international standards and to foster confident, resilient and responsible global citizens.
When I walk around school and talk to students and staff or observe lessons or activities, I am endlessly reminded of how very fortunate we are at BHS: we work with talented young people with very bright futures. As I interview prospective students and staff, they invariably remark on three aspects of the school: the high level of academic achievement, the international opportunities and the warm and nurturing environment. The former is apparent in the many and varied opportunities and outstanding achievements. We are proud to be Bermuda’s first IB World School (since 2000) and the only Round Square School in Bermuda (since 2005). At the end of 2014, we received accreditation by the Council of International Schools, and join over 400 schools, worldwide. Schools that are CIS Accredited provide high quality education by global standards. They demonstrate a commitment to inspiring excellence in their students as well as developing the whole individual. They also foster and model self-evaluation and self-improvement. Colleges and universities worldwide acknowledge that CIS Accredited schools develop the standards and the qualities they seek in their students. Furthermore, in 2015 we received Accreditation by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) establishing the School as a centre of excellence in Bermuda. During both Accreditation processes, BHS achieved high standards in the following areas: the School’s Guiding Statements, teaching and learning, governance, faculty, and operational systems which include fundraising, finance and faculties and partnerships with stakeholders. Both the NEASC and CIS visiting teams commented on:Students' poise and confidence and the enthusiastic student engagement and the joy of learning that was evident in the classroom. These Accreditations recognise that BHS has achieved high standards by professional performance and is committed to continuing improvement.
We want our students to look back at their school days with genuine affection. We receive many e-mails from former staff and students who recall with great fondness and appreciation the time they spent at this school. Some of those comments you will be able to read on our Facebook Page - our current and future students have much to live up to!
As you look through our website to see what is available at BHS, we hope that it gives you a feel for our school and how we achieve our success. Please feel free to contact us should you require further information or more details of what many consider to be a very special place.
BHS During COVID-19
The 2019/2020 School Year was an extraordinary period in BHS's history, and one that none of us will soon forget.
Virtual learning presented our students with a unique opportunity, and I am so proud of how our teachers adjusted and provided a meaningful and enriching experience. I am even more proud of how our students adapted and managed through the tumultuous period of home learning last year.
For all that we lost last year - exams, celebrations, sports competitions, and moments with friends - we found new ways to celebrate and be together. We reflect back on an extraordinary year, in so many ways. There were many challenging moments, but in those moments, I saw the true BHS spirit. In the midst of a stressful and unsettling situation, our school community shone.
One line from our School Song stood out to me while we figured out our new reality in the Spring, which was "Strength of Soul" and it is no coincidence that this motto has now been adopted on our new updated school crest.
