Board of Trustees

The BHS Board of Trustees is tasked with the strategic planning for the School and for making sure the School's Mission is fulfilled. Each Trustee actively promotes the School's Mission while taking responsibility for the financial and strategic future of the School. 

BHS's current Board of Trustees has 13 active members comprised of community leaders, current and former parents of the School and alumnae. Each member brings unique personal and professional experience from a diverse variety of professional and cultural backgrounds. This collective knowledge helps provide a comprehensive perspective that will help steer BHS into the 21st Century. 

The Board meets 8 times a year, and Board members serve on standing committees including:

Advancement Committee
The Advancement Committee has direct responsibility for the oversight of the development program and assumes a leadership role in fundraising.

Buildings and Grounds Committee
The Buildings and Grounds Committee will develop recommendations to ensure that the school plant is safe, as far as possible conforms to codes and, as far as possible, is adequate to meet the needs of the school.

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee reports to the Board, is chaired by an appointee of the Board and has overall responsibility for the financial operation of the school.

Governance Committee
The Governance Committee is responsible for monitoring the Board’s governance process and recommending any revisions thereto.

Strategy Committee
The Strategy Committee guides and oversees school effectiveness by ensuring that a Strategic Plan is generated, implemented and assessed, including the monitoring of the quality of educational outcomes.

Committee membership is an annual commitment, and each member has individual roles on each committee, suited to their strengths. An elected Board Chair and Vice Board Chair, along with the Head of School, as an ex-officio member, nurture and guide all major policy and strategic decisions.

The Board is responsible for determining the School’s values and purpose and ensuring that those align with its Vision and Mission.  The Board is also responsible for selecting and assessing the Head of School, and most importantly supporting the Head in fulfilling the demands of their position as School Leader.   The Board sets the School’s strategic objectives, provides ethical and fiduciary oversight, and ensures the accountability of School Management. 

Trustees are invited to join the Board based on their commitment to the School and the expertise they can provide.  They have often served  on one of the standing committees prior to joining the Board as a Trustee.  New Trustees are elected to the Board by the Members of the Bermuda High School Association at the Annual General Meeting and are eligible to serve up to three 3-year terms.
