Secondary Department Overview

 

The BHS Secondary Department is comprised of three sections: The Middle Years (Years 7-9),
the I/GCSE Years (Years 10-11), and the IB Programme (IB1 and IB2).


The Middle Years: Years 7-9
The Middle years programme at BHS focuses on developing the whole adolescent. It addresses
the adolescent's social, academic, emotional and physical needs and ensures that they are met
through a wide variety of courses and sxtensive sporting and extracurricular activities. Students
at the Middle years level take twelve different subjects. Additionally students are taught about
their preferred learning styles, study skills, test-taking strategies and lifeskills.

The I/GCSE Years: Years 10 & 11
This two year programme focuses on preparing our students for the external British I/GCSEexams. Currently,
all studentstake eight or nine subjects; English Language, English Literature,Mathematics, French or Spanish,
and four or five other subjects. The examination boards varydepending upon the subject: Ed Excel, AQA
and Cambridge. As some of our students will venture to North American colleges/universities, we also
prepare the students for the PSAT exams. TheSAT exams are written during the IB years. To balance the
academics, students have numeroussports and extracurricular activities from which to choose.

The International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Years: I.B. 1 & I.B. 2
The I.B. diploma programme at The Bermuda High School is open to all qualified students in
Bermuda, both male and female. The International Baccalaureate Programme is a rigorous, two
year academic course of study in which students are required to study six subjects, each from
a different area of the curriculum; Foreign Language, Humanities, Experimental Science,
Mathematics and the Arts. In addiction, there is a course in Theory of Knowledge, an an extended
essay of 4,000 words and the completion of 150 hours of community service and activities. The
students who successfully complete this programme have been recognized by top universities
worldwide and are sought after by these institutions.
