Mathematics

Mathematics involves the use of a wide range of texts, resources and manipulative
materials. Critical thinking and the use of collaborative problem solving strategies
are encouraged.

Ginn Abacus Scheme

This mathematics scheme is linked with the teaching objectives outlined in the British
National Numeracy Strategy. The aim is to develop conceptual understanding of
mathematical processes. The programme is based on direct and interactive teaching,
developing mental strategies (such as knowing mathematical skills and facts such as
the timestables or number bonds) and providing materials needed by teachers in their
teaching.

Practical activities at different levels follow introductory teaching, while workbooks and
textbooks provide exercises to consolidate the practical work. Differentiation is
accomplished through reinforcement and challenge exercises based on the core concepts
being covered.

Students are assessed at the end of the units. Other assessments include mixed review
tests throughout the year as well as end of term and end of year assessments.
